Week 2: Graphical Perception Theory
Hello all,
Week 2 has arrived. After the overview and storytelling focus of Week 1, this week will focus on principles to help you make good individual visualizations. We will talk a little bit about the research behind accurate graphical perceptions, and discuss visualizations that achieve that (or don’t). I hope that you will learn some of the reasons behind some of the more common recommendations for making graphs.
The reading assignments are Chapter 2 of “Storytelling” and Chapters 5 and 6 of “Fundamentals”. The Scientific Visualization with Python book also has a good list of “rules” for figures that you can refer to, and section 1.4 on Healy has an alternative presentation of the material on visual perception theory.
I also have included a research paper which discusses some of the basic principles if you want to delve deeper.
You can read more details about Week 2 in the Module 2 page.
Your first homework assignment is due next Sunday. If you have not yet looked at it, I recommend reading it to get a sense for how long it might take you.
Thanks,
Sincerely,
George
