Module 14 - Interactive Visualizations
Overview and Deliverables
- 12/7: Attend the course meetup at 8:00PM Eastern
- Complete work on Story 7, which is due this weekend, Sunday 12/13 at midnight
Readings
- Chapter 6 of Mastering Shiny, which covers the basics of controlling the layout of a shiny app
- Exploration and Explanation in Data-Driven Storytelling (PDF), a research perspective paper on how to use interactive elements to further your data story
For those of you who want to go deeper into interactive visualizations, the most famous resources (not sure if they are universally good) are Stephen Few’s Information Dashboard Design and Wexler, Shaffer, and Cotgreave’s The Big Book of Dashboards. I think the writing on this topic is generally poor and has many gaps.
Meetup
Slides: the quarto deck for this meetup is in the course repository (no PDF rendering was in the export).
In this meetup we continue to further learn Shiny. We discuss themes and both single and multi-page layouts. We also discuss some of the differences between static and dynamic visualizations.
