Week 3: Visualization Quality Features

Hello Class,

Week three has begun. During Week 3 we will continue to study principles that have been developed to guide the creation of good visualizations. Many of these principles were first collected by Tufte, though they have evolved over time. Your readings in Fundamentals of Data Visualization will look at specific aspects of a feature and discuss how these principles should be applied (and when to ignore them), while storytelling will focus on clutter, which is closely related to one of Tufte’s core principles. 

You will also begin assignment 2, a Data Story on the mission of the Federal Reserve to balance preventing inflation and decreasing unemployment. In Week 4 we will cover techniques for plotting time series data, and start to begin a series of weeks that focus on plotting different types of data.
